A Mi Madre and Cobardia
By Ms. Latin Fan
A Mi Madre:
Perfect song to send to your mom on Mother’s Day or on her birthday, especially if she happens to live far away. This is one of those songs one can’t listen to too carefully without wanting to cry.
“Mother, blessed Word that encompasses it all.
Mother, sweet old woman, I’m here to sing
On Mother’s Day, which everyone celebrates happily,
Those who have the luck to have their good mother alive.
In your head now covered in silver
You keep the memories of your youth
Which you sacrificed to take care of your son
Which time and the cruel and inhuman destiny sent away from you.
But I swear to you mother that even living far away
At night I still dream you close to me
I can almost see you watching over my crazy sleep
Praying a thousand prayers asking heaven for my happiness.
I wake up and in anguish look for you
Then like a bird I wish I could fly home
Kiss your white hands, your fresh forehead
And your red eyes
Red due to crying for so many years.”
Remember a song that goes “Mienteme, por piedad yo te lo pido…” (Lie to me, for pity, I ask you…). That song is about a guy who prefers if the girl keeps lying to him instead of dumping him or ignoring him. Lies are easier to deal with, he said. Well, this song “Cowardice” reminds me of that one. Because this guy also knows that he’s being cheated on, but he rather let it keep on happening than lose his woman. Nice lyrics, a story instead of just repeated sentences, so I’m translating it in full. I hope none of you ever have to identify with it!
