Say Something (feat. Chris Stapleton) - Justin Timberlake Review
Oh no! A third new single from JT's new album Man of the Woods. As much as we love the old JT's "Cry Me A River Sexyback" style, JT's return to music is inexplicably unique. "Filthy" exudes the sounds of futuristic "Apple like Steve Jobs" dominating the world in a Technorati room. "Supplies" reminds us of "World War 10" in a distant future where strange things happen. We had low hopes and weak anticipation with the release of "Say Something". To say that Justin's reunion with renowned country artist Chris Stapleton could reignite the iconic sparks in the 2015 Country Music Awards is indeed an overstatement and misnomer. Well, at least, Chris sold more than 150,000 copies of his debut album in a week and more than 2 million thereafter post the electrifying duet.
"Say Something" is a huge relief from "Filthy" and "Supplies". It has both a country-pop tune with a tinge of electro from the MPC sampler as evident in the video as well. The music is accompanied with guitar-driven sound that gives the song an edge over the previous two. The video displays Timberlake and Chris singing and strumming the guitars around the famed Bradbury Building in Los Angeles.
The lyrics are just mediocre though. There is an excessive repetition of the phrase "Maybe I'm looking for something I can't have" in the pre, post chorus. And the song concludes with the following paradoxical phrase "Sometimes the greatest way to say something is to say nothing". The three songs have indeed not brought out the best of Timberlake but at least, light is at the end of the tunnel for "Man of the Woods". Let's see whether JT's next single release will be an earworm masterpiece or a slumber lullaby.
